Mastery is an indicator to how much you've used something. With higher mastery, you can unlock new moves, do more damage, consume less stamina, or stay in/stay using continuous moves/"forms" (forms is in quotes as Dominated and Awakened forms are "permanent" so long as you don't go in water or run out of stamina.
