Deinonychus (die-no-nik-us) was a genus of Dromaeosaurid dinosaur that lived in North America during the Early Cretaceous. Deinonychus could grow to around 3.4 meters in length, 1.1 meter in height, and have a mass in excess of 73 kg, perhaps occasionally reaching 100 kg. It possessed a claw on each foot which could have been used to stab prey. Deinonychus was an effective predator. It had a relatively powerful bite, indicating it could crush bones in its jaw.
